John Dunlop was involved with the founding of MRES over 40 years ago as the Solar Office Manager at the Minnesota State Energy Office. He is the Founder and Owner of Renewable Energy Services, a consultancy in Minneapolis, Minnesota, providing technical and policy support for carbon-free renewable energy to address the climate crisis. Recent commitments have included:
Manager of the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society $2.3 million grant from Xcel Energy to build three low-moderate income community solar projects (current)
Chair of the 2019 American Solar Energy Association national conference that focused only on taking urgent climate action
Technical representative for the Minnesota Solar Energy Industries Association on the 2018 docket before the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission on new interconnection standards for distributed renewable energy resources
Collection of solar thermal data sources in Minnesota for the Minnesota Department of Commerce, 2015
Technical advisor for the 2014 Minnesota Renewable Energy Society Assessment of the Distributed Wind Energy Market
John formerly spent 21 years with the American Wind Energy Association, providing regional management and national technical services, and before that was the manager of the Minnesota Solar (meaning “Renewable Energy”) Office in the Minnesota state energy office for 15 years. He was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in a village in southern India.
John has degrees in physics and mechanical engineering and is a licensed professional mechanical engineer in the State of Minnesota. He also is a Certified Advanced Metrication Specialist, U.S. Metric Association.
