This is a single-family home in Champlin, 4-bedroom, 4-level split. We have very limited south-facing roof space, and at the time the smallest inverter we could find required 7 modules, so we have two separate mounting examples at our site (flush mount and stand-off).
Simple grid-tied photovoltaic system with no batteries.
(7) Evergreen 180 watt modules
SMA Sunny Boy 1100U inverter
This site is an excellent example of how conservation and efficiency work together with renewable energy. Our initial home electricity consumption was 600 kWh/month. Before we installed this solar system, we set out to learn where that 600 kWh/month was going. We were able to reduce our use to 278 kWh/month before installing solar. For most families this little system might only be 15-20% of their bill, but for us it makes about 60% of our electricity!
$12,000 installed cost, including all permits and interconnect fee. We received $2,000 federal tax credit and $2,520 back from the Minnesota Solar Electric Rebate. Net cost: $7,500. (Today it would qualify for a full 30% tax credit so net cost would be $5,500).
The 'payback' that was important to us was environmental. We are offsetting coal-fired electricity. The "ROE" (Return On Environment) was immediate.
