Macalester College Wind Turbine - 2009![]()
Macalester installed in April 2003 a 10 kilowatt BWC Excel wind turbine on the edge of the athletic complexes of the campus, the first of its size in the city of St. Paul (90’ tall with three 27' propellers for a total height of 102’). It's a source of alternate energy for the college and provides electricity for Olin-Rice Hall. It is also an opportunity for students, staff and faculty to research and learn about wind energy, wind patterns, geography, environmental studies, and the practicality of wind turbines in urban areas. Macalester received a donation from Xcel energy that covered the manufacturing cost of the turbine while the 2003 senior class gift paid for the installation. System Components
