Hartley Nature Center has incorporated sustainability in every aspect of the design of its building research and design around placement of windows to incorporation of a solar wall for the slow release of passive winter heating. A roof-mounted and tracker-pole system incorporates over 13 kW of potential solar power.

System Components
solar electric solar heat passive solar ground-source heat
  • 11.8 kW roof-mounted solar PV system
  • 1.3 kW tracker-pole system
  • Passive solar design with enhanced natural lighting
  • Ground source heat pump
  • Solar wall

Additional Measures
  • 100% Recycled-content roof shingles
  • Recycled-content ceiling and carpet tiles
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood
  • Recycled latex paint and natural-based wood glaze
  • Non-PVC materials
  • Site chosen for low environmental impact and high solar potential, with careful attention to wetlands, trees, and native plants during and after construction
  • Minimal site impact through use of pervious paving systems that allows stormwater to percolate into ground, including Grasspave2 plastic grid system and EnviroPave paver spacer system
  • Energy conservation
  • Insulated concrete forms
  • Heat-recovery ventilation
  • Energy system sensors
