Explore Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy Classes & Workshops

The Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (MRES) and Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) are pleased to jointly offer Renewable Energy Workshops. Learn the basics of Solar Hot Water, Solar Photovoltaic, and Wind Energy. Build on that knowledge by taking the accompanying Site Assessor class and learn how to determine a site's renewable energy potential. All classes are one full day, with the exception of the Wind Site Assessment class, which will be four full days.

Solar Boat Regatta

MRES' Solar Boat Regatta provides an opportunity for middle and high school students (as well as individual boat builders) to build a boat that runs on solar power and compete in races. This event has given hundreds of junior and senior high school students valuable and unique experience with solar electricity, wiring, motors, fluid dynamics, boat design, construction, and teamwork. Family, friends, and the general public are welcome to attend the Solar Boat Regatta to cheer on their favorite boat.

The Eco Experience at the Minnesota State Fair

As part of The Eco Experience at the Minnesota State Fair, Connect To The Sun, the solar exhibit sponsored by the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (MRES), walks visitors through the world of solar energy in simple terms with demonstrations of actual equipment.

Minnesota Solar Tour

The self-guided, public Minnesota Solar Tour features over 30 exemplary homes, businesses, and institutions that have incorporated renewable energy into the design and operation of their buildings. From geothermal heat pumps using the earth as a huge thermal buffer to wind turbines elegantly spinning in the breeze and the many incarnations of solar energy between earth and sky, this event offers local residents an opportunity to find out how their neighbors are trimming their energy bills, increasing their energy independence, and taking steps to address global warming. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in solar and other renewable energies to view installations and talk with building owners, builders, architects, and planners about their experiences.

Solar Power Trailer Rental

The Solar Power Trailer is both an educational tool and a fully functioning power source that can provide quiet, clean, renewable power to any site.

Create a Community Solar Project

A community solar project allows individuals to work together to achieve stewardship goals, to overcome the market barriers to solar investment, and to do so in a way that builds the capacity of community organizations or institutions. Community groups use the installation of a solar system to strengthen the bond that defines their community. The connection to the community is strengthened during the planning process, as part of installation of the system, and in rewarding and recognizing the community as the solar system reduces greenhouse gases, lowers energy bills, and provides a visible example of sustainability for the community in the years after installation. This guidebook serves as a planning aid to individuals, organizations, and communities who wish to be part of the solution to our society's energy dilemmas, but do not know how to take action.

reARCH

The Initiative for Renewable Energy in Architecture (reARCH) is a collaborative project designed to provide hands-on knowledge, resources, and tools that design professionals need to integrate renewable energy, assess its economic costs, and determine its environmental benefits.
